Playing Favourites: Ali M., June 5, 2011

5 Jun

Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA Visitor Ali M. with "Preparing the Meal" (c. late 1970s)by Mark Alikaswa (1928-2007) from Arviat, Stone, Private Collection on Loan to MIA.

Where are you from?

I am originally from Iran but have been living in Canada since 1982.

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

This is my first visit. I am here to see artistic work by Native people which reflects their togetherness and life.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

I really like the sense of community that this piece embodies. My wife told me of Inuit communities where the doors are all open and children are raised by everyone. I love this sense of the collective.
